Immanuel was grateful to host MLK Scholarships Milwaukee for their fiftieth anniversary celebration on Sunday afternoon, January 11. The Rev. Danny Murphy, one of the early scholarship recipients, returned to offer the keynote for the day. Rev. Murphy currently serves as General Presbyter of the Trinity Presbytery in South Carolina.
The MLK Scholarships Milwaukee started with three ecumenical pastors in Milwaukee, Rev.
Ernest Glenn, Christ Presbyterian Church, Rev. Joe Ellwanger, Cross Lutheran Church and Rev.
Lyles, United Methodist Church. Over the years, students from 12 – 15 participating
congregations receive scholarships through meeting an application process that includes
writing an essay based on a quote from one of Dr. Martin Luther King’s speeches chosen that
year.
