IN THE BEGINNING

Aaron Copland (1900-1990)

Genesis 1:1-2:7

Composed by Aaron Copland in 1947, In the Beginning gives expression to the creation story of the first chapter of Genesis and the beginning of the second creation story in chapter two. Its verse-and-chorus form gives voice to the framework of the story: the soloist introduces the action for each of the seven days of creation with “And God said ...” the chorus develops the creative word and closes the creative activity of each day.
