Theological Classics
Theological Classics meets the second Tuesday of each month in the fall, winter, and spring. Led by Immanuel's Parish Associate, the Rev. Dr. James Fisher, the group offers an educational opportunity for adults interested in exploring the writings of significant theologians. Recent studies have included John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion, Gustavo Gutierrez's A Theology of Liberation, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer's The Cost of Discipleship.
In the fall of 2008, the Theological Classics group will be discussing
God and Empire. Jesus against Rome, Then and Now by John Dominic Crossan. One of the nation's foremost New Testament scholars, Crossan is a founding director of the Jesus Seminar and Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies at DePaul University in Chicago. In this Scripturally-based work, Crossan raises important questions about the connection between religion and politics, between spiritual faith and temporal power, and about the use of violence and nonviolence in bringing about lasting change. The study will begin October 14.
The group will meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Waverly Room on the second floor of the Waverly House, 1035 N. Waverly Place. For more information contact the church office (414-276-4757).
