"We will grow in faith . . ."

Christian Education isn't just kid stuff!  Whatever our age or stage of life, we are always learning to “walk,” to live in God's ways.  At every step of the way there are questions about the direction we go, the decisions we make, the company we keep.  Adult Christian Education continues the faith journey, giving us wisdom and insight.

We have walked together through some tough and timely subjects in our adult education program:  public education, environmental concerns, urban housing, transforming families, and disaster relief.  There are matters of faith and church life that command our attention: biblical studies, hymnody, religious art, seasons of the church year, church history, and contemporary theological issues.  There are also issues of personal crisis and development that we discuss within the context of faith: grief and loss, value formation, the challenges of life transitions, parenting, aging.

Weekly forums are offered each Sunday (September through June) from 11:20 until noon in the Dining Room.  The timing of the program coincides with the Church School so that parents might enjoy the congregation’s educational programs while their children are in Church School.  The leadership for the adult education program is provided by Immanuel's ministers and members.  We also utilize the resources of area colleges, universities, and seminaries, and invite community leaders to speak about timely issues and concerns.

THEOLOGICAL CLASSICS:  The Book of Confessions

Second Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. with Dr. James Fisher (February 14)

Each creed will be treated as a “Theological Classic,” examining its context, the purpose and meaning behind its rhetoric, and its continuing contribution to the theology of the Reformed tradition.  On February 14 the group will consider the Westminster Confession of Faith and Shorter Catechism. These documents have had more influence on American Presbyterianism than any of the other Reformation-era confessions. Copies of the Book of Confessions are available for $10 at the book table in the Narthex.

“IF IT’S THURSDAY . . . It’s Tillich”

Second Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. with Dr. Fisher

Explore The Essential Tillich: An Anthology of the Writings of Paul Tillich and uncover Tillich’s answers to some of the most profound questions about human existence.  On February 9, the group will focus its conversation on Parts IV (Religion and Culture) and V (Love, Power, and Justice).

“99 WAYS TO RAISE SPIRITUALLY HEALTHY CHILDREN”

A Program for Parents, Grandparents, and others

February 26 and March 18 ~ 11:20

“Practice hospitality”  “Be kind”  “Nurture the environment”  “Stand up for justice”  “Keep the Sabbath”  “Encourage questions”

These are just some of the 99 ideas, practices, and activities offered in a new book by Kathleen Long Bostrom… ways to connect children to God and to develop an awareness of God’s grace and presence in every family’s daily life.  We will use this book as a starting place for a continuing conversation on two upcoming Sunday mornings.  All are invited; participants will receive a copy of the book.  For more information, please contact Ms. Dow in the church office (414-276-4757).
